‘Trapped by the Duty to be Dutiful’ is an extension of the project ‘Wor(l)d FATIGUE’ (2022) in which The Letter Escape Department and I try to imagine all the wor(l)ds being tired of standing up. In a discussion with BO9K’s founder Yue Yuan, he brought up the Chinese ‘Lying Flat’ or tangping (躺平) movement, that calls on young workers and professionals to opt out of the struggle for workplace success, and to reject the promise of consumer fulfilment.
